mud wasp

Delta emarginatum

Description:

from a distance a shiny black, long waisted wasp about 30mm long; however, wings brown and when close enough red about the head, face, antennae and legs observed. It builds a multicelled mud nest resembling a small fist sized ball stuck to the wall or other flat surface

Habitat:

my bathroom. Sub-tropical tree/bush savanna, hot wet summers, dry mild winters

Notes:

The nest is just above the hand basin and to date the wasp has not displayed any hostile intentions (the house is only occupied 3 or 4 days a week). I think she has finished egg laying and is currently applying additional plaster the the exterior of the nest
