Saíra-preciosa (Chestnut-backed Tanager)

Description:

The Chestnut-backed Tanager is a Pesseriforme bird of the family Thraupidae. The male is one of the most colorful tanagers having light brown head, neck and back; cream rump and wing coverts; neck, chest and belly are water green, light blue pinions and rectrizes, black beak and a black stripe running from the eye to the beak and gray legs. Females are less colorful but have the light brown head and the rest of the body in green tones. Youngs are brown with greenish wings and tail. Both males and females measure 15 cm.

Habitat:

It lives inside the forest and its borders, being common in forests of Araucaria and in the Atlantic Forest. It lives in the forest canopy in association with other species of birds. In the colder months of the year it appears in more open areas and even in urban areas in search of food.

Notes:

It feeds mainly on fruits but also arthropods. Visit bird feeders frequently.
