A large bee-like insect, spotted in Zion National Park in Utah.
These bee-flies were feeding almost exclusively on rabbitbush, as pictured. this shrub blooms in late summer into the fall.
Per the attached article, this insect is beneficial in that it feeds on caterpillars, which are considered harmful. It lays its eggs on the caterpillar's back. When the eggs hatch...the larva burrow into the caterpillar, ultimately killing the host.
