A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Impatiens capensis
A summer-blooming member of family Balsamiaceae. Hummingbirds and bees are the primary pollinators. The seed pods forcibly eject seeds when touched; this is the source of another common name, touch-me-not.
Moist soil, often near water.
Again, the name touch-me-not refers to seed ejection, not any harmful effect of the plant. In fact, the leaves of jewelweed are said to alleviate the pain of nettle stings and can remove the rash-causing oil of poison ivy from skin.
