Smooth Rock Tripe

Umbilicaria mammulata

Description:

Large foliose lichen that was greenish brown on top and black underneath. They ranged in size from 5-10 cm.

Habitat:

Growing on a large rock among moss in a mixed forest.

Notes:

This species is one of the largest lichens in the world. The thallus can be up to 15cm in diameter. The largest in this spotting was approximately 10cm.

I was told that the brown zigzags might be damage caused by slugs...Can anyone confirm this? I haven't been able to find any info about it so far.
