Female Eastern Towhee

Pipilo erythrophthalmus

Description:

An oversized sparrow of the east with attractive markings.

Habitat:

Eastern Towhees are well-known birds of the undergrowth. Their rummaging through the leaves makes more noise than one would expect from their size.

Notes:

Their "chewink" or "drink your tea" call informs you on how common they are, but many of your sightings of them end up as glimpses through tangles of stems.
