eastern fox squirrel

Sciurus niger

Notes:

The other evening this squirrel took off with a nut jar lid that was sitting next to me outside in the backyard. I followed it with my camera as it struggled and struggled to get the lid up to the top of the tree. It was pretty comical. Maybe it wanted to add to it's nest. I tried to watch it as far as I could until lost sight of it as it got closer the top of this large pine tree. As I was standing near the tree the lid fell to the grown directly in front of me. I felt so bad for this squirrel to loose it after working so hard to get it up to the top.

It actually is plastic but you may be right about the teething thing.

Maybe it was teething and it felt good to chew on to the metal. But it really is in his best interest that he dropped the cap. It could have hurt him.

It was such a shame when that lid came falling to the grown. He was adorable and so determined to drag the lid through the branches to get it to the top. He deserved to have that lid. :(
