Twelve-spotted Skimmer

Libellula pulchella

Description:

Wings have 3 spots each. Black body with bluish yellow horizontal band along abdomen. Dark eyes.

Habitat:

Area is a gated man-made lake community, surrounded by rural agricultural land, and some deciduous forest areas. In areas that are not mowed, the land is old fields within the community, and are mowed biannually. Ditchlines and treelines are left untouched.

Notes:

Easily confused with a female Common Whitetail or Long-tailed Skimmer...but they are distinguished by the abdominal line being broken dashes instead of solid horizontal line as above.
