Lanius ludovicianus
A passerine that acts as a bird of prey. The shrike is similar in size and color to a Mockingbird but the Shrike has a white belly, grey head and a distinctive black eye mask. The bill is small but has some features of a bird of prey. The Shrike's legs are too week to hold its prey so it relies on thorns and in this case barbed wire to impale its food while its sharp beak can tear the animal apart.
Open fields with trees, thorny bushes, barbed wire, etc.
Spotted on a perimeter fence, with its mate, on Moody Air Force Base, Valdosta, GA.

Handsome bird. Good information. Thanks.
My favorite meme: birds on barbed wire.
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
