Black Swan

Cygnus atratus

Description:

Black swan pair, large black birds, tall necks and red beaks. Red eyes. The feathers on the back (wings) have lighter edges and a sort of ruffled appearance when folded back.

Habitat:

Tidal lake in coastal farmland

Notes:

This pair have been seen here on the Flagstaff inlet for weeks now, quite attached to each other. There are a few other pairs that hang around down the coast in the farm paddocks. Many years ago I used to do swan counts on this inlet and most days in the season there would be more than a hundred. but now sadly less than twenty in the whole district.
