Western Marsh Harrier

Circus aeruginosus

Description:

The Marsh Harrier is a species of raptor typically associated with wetland habitats such as reed beds and marshes. Marsh Harriers generally express strong sexual dichromatism, meaning that males and females are dissimilar in appearance. Adult females are noticeably larger than males. These raptors are slow fliers and can remain airborne at speeds of less than 32kmph (20mph). Flying at such slow speeds makes it easier for them to detect prey.

Fun fact! Male marsh harriers sometimes exhibit female plumage, though they don't actually change gender. Scientists believed that this sexual mimicry fools other males into leaving them alone, allowing them to get intimate with females without risk of attack from the resident male!
