Giant Whip Scorpion

Mastigoproctus giganteus giganteus

Description:

Large black scorpion with a horizontal striped tail. Two large pincers and a characteristic red whip. This creature varies from other scorpions in that it does not have the venom loaded pointed tail to impale and envenomate its prey. It kills prey by crushing with its pincers and the red whip tail is used for defense by spraying acid. This is the only whip scorpion that occurs in the USA.

Habitat:

Found crawling across a path of sand and leaf litter at Enchanted Forest in Titusville Florida
