Garden Orb Weaving Spider - Female

Description:

Large robust spider. Female has bright red bases of legs. Rest of legs and cephalothorax reddish brown with long white hairs. Abdomen brown, usually with darker foliate pattern and sometimes white spots or a stripe. Triangular abdomen with 2 noticeable humps towards the front. Body length - 22mm ( Female ) The spider rests with legs drawn in.

Habitat:

Builds a large , strongly constructed orb web in the evening to catch its prey of usually flying insects. The spider rests with its legs drawn in in nearby foliage during the day and is very well camouflaged. A widespread species in every Australian state except Tasmania.
