Fall Webworm Moth Caterpillar

Hyphantria cunea

Description:

Family: Arctiidae. (Tiger Moths) Up to 1.37 inches (35 mm) in length. Color is highly variable from pale yellow to dark gray with yellow spots and long and short bristles. Two cream colored stripes along side. Larvae stage lasts 4-6 weeks. Young larvae feed on upper surface of leaves inside created web nests or tents. Later instars feed on entire leaves. Aesthetic pests only. No real harm to bushes or trees.

Habitat:

Woods/lawn edge. Native to North America.

Leaning toward Fall Webworm Moth caterpillar (Hyphantria cunea) which has variable coloring, but seems to be the only caterpillar in PA with very long hairs.
