Brown Beeflies

Systoechus sp.

Description:

Brown beeflies mating. The larger of the two was female, at least 20 mm in length. The smaller male beefly had large eyes and a long proboscis.

Habitat:

Spottted flying high around a native cherry ballart, settling for a few seconds before taking off again.

Notes:

I was impressed by the size of the female beefly but could not get better shots as they were too far up.
Looked a little like Tangle-veined flies (Nemestrinidae) but as I could not see the vein patterns ont he wings, I will leave it as beeflies which were in large numbers. I would really appreciate confirmation of the ID and/or comments on any other distinguishing features between the two families.
Family Bombyliidae
