Hooded Pitta

Pitta sordida

Description:

It is a passerine bird, green with a black head and chestnut crown. It forages on the ground for insects and their larvae, and also eats berries. They are highly territorial and their fluty double-noted whistle calls ("qweeek-qweeek") can be constantly heard from their territories, sometimes throughout the nights. This is how our guide attracted them into the area where we were, by imitating their long whistle call.

Habitat:

Very hard to see. You hear their call but they are always hidden in the low bushes. This one was seen in the forest next to a small effluent of the river Kinabatangan, area of Sukau, Sabah.

I am a birder, that is why I loved so much these pictures, quite different to the 'Pittas we have in Costa Rica. Thanks for sharing and I hope some day I'll be able to get that far for birding, orchids and bugs =) !!

Thank you Daniel! Pittas arevery shy bird, very difficult to spot. You can hear them close by but they always hide very well in the lower branches f the thick forest. This was the best shots we could get..not too sharp but enough to show the birdie :-)
