Great Egret

Ardea alba

Description:

Non breeding plumage. Most of the time I saw these egrets fishing, they were accompanied nearby by one little egret (next spotting). I wonder if this is an interspecies symbiotic tactic for fishing or is just opportunistic behavior (?) It seems a very wdespread behavior though, as I saw many mixed fishing couples like this along the river and the birds did not seem to go away from each other so I am inclined to think it is symbiotic behavior.

Habitat:

Kinabatangan river, area of Sukau, Sabah.
