Lonchura punctulata
Size 10.5 - 12 cm .In breeding plumage upper parts chocolate brown,lower white speckled with black.In non breeding and immature plumage,more or less plain brown.Sexes alike.Flock up to 200 birds.They can be seen clinging tenaciously to reeds and larger grasses,yet may fly up into trees or into bushes if disturbed.The diet comprises grass seeds and similar products,but may also include small insects.

The bird is feeding on algae. Munia's feeds on algae,rich in protein before breeding season.

Somehow these birds have been introduced into Southern California. I saw some at a friend's bird feeder just a few weeks ago.
