Small white

Pieris rapae

Description:

My first butterfly of the year! She entered my house, so I made pics of here while she was inside and then released her back out. On looking at the pics in Wikipedia, it looks that my butterfly was a female.

Habitat:

Grasslands, woodlands. Belgium

Oh, yes, I did see it later on in my own guides. I was just second-guessing myself too because I was already unsure that I had wrote the right ID. It happens once in a while that I add the wrong ID and later I realize or ohers tell me. If I don´t agree with the proposed ID I also keep my own guess but with you I know you are more expert insects than me so hence the trust :-)

Just look at the wing tip. There is only a small rectangular-like shaped patch, in Brassicae it is larger, more extending, meaning over the black spot and more triangular-shape. Trusting in me is OK, but I prefer that you trust your own eyes ;-), but thanks anyway for the confidence.

Hi Bayucca, I was actually not sure of which Pieris. I trust your expertise so I will change the species now ;-)

Thanks, Mark! Yesterday I saw a second butterfly although I did not make a pic. The weather has been very nice here this winter and this I think will make butterflies to show up much earlier than usual. Now I hope the weather does not change to bad. :-)
