A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Brachycephalus ephippium
It measures about 1.5 cm, is diurnal and lives hidden in bromeliads or under the foliage on the ground, leaving after the rains in spring and summer, so the easiest way to spot him. Rarely jumps, preferring to walk.
Gets its name because of its yellow gold color. It is a species of frog with direct development, ie, the hatchlings of the eggs already formed, without going through the tadpole stage. Such eggs are laid directly on the damp forest floor.
When they threatened practicing apparent death and also release poisonous substance into the skin. However, this substance does not offer any fatal danger to man.
In Brazil, it occurs in the states of Bahia, Espirito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo and I found this critter in a place that it is about 840 m above sea level, near the jungle of Atlantic Forest, at Parque São Vicente, in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro.
The town of the coordinates (lat: -22.538256,, long: -43.228637) that I used for search, is not DUQUE DE CAXIAS, as reports the search map tool of this page, but PETRÓPOLIS, as shown here:
