Spotted Newt

Notophthalmus viridescens

Description:

The adult Spotted (or Eastern) Newt has a dark olive back with a line of black rimmed red spots and pale/yellowish belly flecked with black dots. During breeding season the males, like this one, have an enlarged cloaca and back legs. They develop black pads on their hind toes to maintain amplexus and the tail fin crest becomes high and wavy.

Notes:

The clarity of the pictures isn't great since they were taken from above the water's surface but it was too cool to see him enjoying the morning sun!
