White Ibis with gular sac (or wattle)

Eudocimus albus

Description:

This white ibis is showing all the characteristics of breeding season. The bill and legs are bright red and there is a bright red gular sac (or wattle) at his chin. His bill is also blacker at the end. This sac is only visible for 10 days or so in mating season so it was a pretty lucky find.

Habitat:

Along an inland fresh water canal

Notes:

I have a flock of 30 white ibis that regularly visit but this is the first one with a red wattle. I've seen them with a black end to their beaks though this one is rather dark.

I found out what the red "wattle" was and changed the description to reflect that it is a "gular sac" characteristic of breeding individuals during a brief period of breeding season.

You're right Fyn Kind, he does look like an old guy. Especially the second and third photos!

You are correct, this is a White Ibis. About the wattle, maybe it's old? Dunno.
