Description:

Xylaria is a genus of ascomycetous fungi commonly found growing on dead wood. They are club-like decomposers of wood or plant debris that become black and hard by maturity, reminiscent of carbon or charcoal.

Habitat:

Deep in the Selva Negra cloud forest in the Matagalpa Highlands.
