Double-crested Cormorant

Phalacrocorax auritus

Description:

The cormorant is a large bird with a long neck, webbed feet, and a hooked bill. Its body size ranges from 28-35 inches in length with a wingspan between 45 and 48 inches. As an adult it can weigh between 2 ½ pounds to 5 ½ pounds. Males and females are similar in appearance. They are black-brown in color with a small area of orange on their face. They have a long brownish-yellow beak. Cormorants sit low in the water because of their heavy body. They dive to catch small fish and can then bee seen drying their wings on the shoreline or in trees.

Habitat:

The double-crested cormorant can be seen in almost every aquatic habitat and is the most common cormorant in North America. It will nest in trees, cliffs, and on the ground.

Notes:

This handsome cormorant was on the beach near Fort Myers, Florida. It didn't seem to mind that I was around and it allowed me to get fairly close to it with my camera.
