African TulipTree, Fountain Tree

Spathodea campanulata

Description:

The African TulipTree is an amazing sight, flaming bright in the dark canopy. But it's a weed in Kauai, and over a lot of the rest of the world, too. Part of the reason it's such a pest is that people get one for their yard, and it spreads from there. But it is amazingly beautiful, isn't it? Wildlife find a lot to like, too, with tasty nectar and water-filled buds.

Habitat:

Native to tropical dry forests of Africa, it is quite adaptive and does well in the moist rain forests of Kauai.
