Four-toed Elephant Shrew

Petrodromus tetradactylus

Description:

While out surveying for galagos (Primates, Galagidae) this Four-toed Elephant Shrew crossed our path. A species that, in general, is very camera shy but when chasing off a puff adder (Bitis arietans), it appeared that me and my colleague was the least of his concern.

Habitat:

Evergreen coastal forest.

Notes:

The survey was conducted as part of a National Geographic Society Committee for Research and Exploration supported project - Molecular phylogeny of East African dwarf galagos. For details on the project, please visit our website www.galagoides.se.

Welcome to the community gdifnr2, and congratulations on earning spotting of the day with your very first contribution!

The four-toed elephant shrew is usually very camera shy – this one was spotted by National Geographic researchers conducting a nocturnal study of galagos, an endangered primate.
