Chequered skipper

Carterocephalus palaemon

Description:

Also known as the arctic skipper is a small woodland butterfly in the family Hesperiidae. Brown and yellowish orange spots or markings.

Habitat:

Spotted at the Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve at the tree line. In North America, chequered skippers can be found around forest trails, forest edges, and open grassy areas. It is interesting to note that even though the chequered skipper goes by arctic skipper it does not live in Arctic areas.
