Carpilius convexus
This Convex Crab has a worried look which is rather endearing, reminding me of a puppy or kitten. It was about 3" across, found in the surf on the northern shore of Kauai, and ha a puffed-up look, as though slightly over-inflated. This crab is wide-spread, found over a major part of the world, but there isn't much information about them available. With all its names, Convex Crab, Convex Reef Crab, Variable Coral Crab, you'd think someone would have done a study of it.
This crab is found on reefs, and is nocturnal. That may be why it's not often encountered.
It probably wasn't very happy at being washed up on the beach.

Hey, thanks! Nice to know my little kitty-faced crab has friends. Now, if it only had ears!!!!
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!

Thanks, Nick!
