Araneus diadematus
Orb-weaver spider. The coloring of these spiders can vary very much but they usually have mottled markings across the back, with five or more large, white dots forming a cross. The size of this specimen was ca. 1-1.5 cm. Aparently it is a female, larger than the male. The webs are built by the larger females who usually lie head down on the web, waiting for the prey.
Spotted at an area of coastal dunes, close to a small brook.
