Red Tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

Description:

A mid-sized bird of prey that comes in a variety of colors from almost all white to a dark brown. This is a lighter morph, and probably a young bird given the bars on the tail. It grabbed a snake on the ground, then flew up into a nearby tree to eat. I think the snake is a Plains Garter Snake (Thamnophis radix).

Habitat:

meadow
