Longhorn beetle

Euderces picipes

Description:

Elongate, slender, cylindrical. Black, rarely dark reddish-brown, shining; sparsely pubescent with grayish hairs. Elytra each with an oblique raised ivory-like bar at middle; antenna 1 and legs usually dark reddish-brown. Length 5-8 mm. (information from BugGuide)

Habitat:

City park

Notes:

This beetle emerged from a log that had been brought indoors over the winter, so its emergence time was a bit earlier than if it had been left outside in the cooler temps. Thanks to Arthur Evans for the ID on this one.

Jeff, my first thought when I saw it was ant, due to the size and its movements. Closer inspection proved it to be a tiny longhorn beetle. I took it outside for photos and after about 5 shots I lost it. These are the best I ended up with.

Lauren, I was happy it was the red one, too! Since we still have the log in an exhibit, I'll keep an eye out for more of these beetles.

Neat find! It looks like both an ant and a Clerid! Your reference says that the red ones are more rare. Super!

Definitely a beetle, but from a distance, it looks like a wood ant. Maybe it is just me, but is there some mimicry here?
