Pyrops karenius
This beautiful insect was spotted while doing a short walk from The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project in Khao Phra Thaew reserve in Phuket, Thailand.
Hi Muckpuk, no this was not a guided walk. This was a self-guided walk through the forest path at the back of the rehabilitation centre. Not a very long walk either, unfortunately (my travel companion started getting cold feet after a while and we had to backtrack - imagine what else we could have seen)! :)
Did you walk there with a guide? Was it Mon? I worked there....lovely place! Never spotted a lantern fly and feel quite jealous.. :-)
Beautiful capture Mark, congrats on the well deserved SOTD and thanks for sharing
Congratulations MarkBolnik, this lovely lantern bug has been featured as our PN pot of the Day!

Hi MarkBolnik! There are many species in the genus Pyrops, and while Pyrops candelaria is the type species yours is Pyrops karenius as identified by Mark Ridgway and agreed by others. As we wish to feature this spotting today I've taken the liberty to make the change for you. Beautiful image!
Great photo, I've always wanted to see one.
Please check out the mission Wildlife of Southern Thailand and add the picture if you don't mind.
