Green Heron (fledglings)

Butorides virescens

Description:

Adults are chestnut color with dark crown and long light stripes down the neck. Name comes from the dark green sheen on the back. Dark bill and yellow legs. Short thick legs and small size for a heron. As most herons they can pull back their necks and appear smaller and hunched. And extend the neck to reach for it's prey. Spotted the 3 fledglings which have orange/yellow bills, yellow flesh around the eyes and pale yellow legs and more streaks to help blend in.

Habitat:

Found mostly near freshwater sources with plenty of cover from trees or shrubs. These were found in a small eucalyptus tree that was leaning over the water.

Notes:

Parent was a short distance away. In a nearby pond was a family of Black-capped Night Heron.
