Chinese Mantis, female, gravid

Tenodera sinensis

Description:

Very gravid Chinese mantis found in the wildflowers near my house. I took her inside as a pet that summer and fed her all the budworms eating my flowers. :)

Habitat:

Wildflowers, unplowed field, rural deciduous area, Clermont County

Notes:

Fun fact: While the majority of their diet consists of other insects (including the heads of their mates), they have also been known to eat small rodents, lizards, and even hummingbirds.
