Mastigodryas sp
about one foot (30cm)
tropical rainforest
This was the only snake I spotted after spending 75 days hiking and traveling around Colombia. My guide spotted this as we were hiking back to the lodge after camping in the forest for a few days. Thankfully it was fairly calm and let me approach closely. We came close to another much larger snake on a different day but only my guide saw it, I just heard it flee. Spotting #1800!
Well my search for a specific species failed, but I'm still pretty positive it's in the Genus Mastigodryas!
Thanks Fyn and Brendan for your suggestions, I'm not sure which one it is. I'm not great with snake ID. Brendan I spotted this snake in the Amazon but it's not my area, I wish it was! It didn't appear to be too much of a drought when I was there. It rained a lot in most places. Thanks everyone for the comments.
Great pics, congrats on 1800! Seems to be a drought in your area, including up thru Panama. No snakes have been out moving lately from the reports I'm getting. They really need some rain! This is a neotropical racer, genus Mastigodrays. Not sure of the species though?
