Giant Red Velvet Mite

Dinothrombium sp.

Description:

Bright red and has short hairs that give it a velvety appearance. It has eight legs and also has a 'waist'.

Habitat:

Under forest undergrowth and when hibernating they go underground in silk lined caverns. Found in the Southwest and mexico but have been seen as far as New Jersey.
