Brown-banded carder bee;

Bombus humilis

Description:

There are only three species of bumblebee that have this coloration, B. humilis, B. muscorum and B. pascuorum. B. humilis has a pale ginger colour except for a darker brown band on the abdomen and has black hairs at the base of the wing bases but these need to be looked for very carefully as there may only be one or two dark hairs. B. muscorum has no black hairs on the thorax around the wing bases. B. pascuorum has black hairs on the abdomen which the other two species lack. Bombus humilis is normally found in open flower-rich areas and doesn’t occur in woodlands or in gardens, unless the latter are close to known colonies.

Habitat:

Mountain meadows. Parque Natural de Somiedo

Notes:

Camera Model: NIKON D300. Exposure Time: 1/320 sec., f/9, ISO Speed Rating: 800. Exposure Bias: 0 EV. Focal Length: 300.0 mm. No flash fired.
