HAHAOK, this looks like a species of Hare (also called Jackrabbits). There are a couple of species found in California so you may need to look at some images and compare them to what you saw. I think the most likely candidate is the Black-tailed Jackrabbit (also known as the American Desert Hare).

With those long ears, probably a Jack rabbit :)
