I would guess that is just where they settled after landing.

Thanks, ForestDragon! At first, I thought mating because there were no other moths around at all. But when I tried to look them up, it looked like two species, just like you said. Any idea why these guys were huddling?Thanks for the ID and the suggestion!

The large gray one is a Waved Sphinx Moth, Ceratomia undulosa. http://bugguide.net/node/view/3749

The smaller tan one is a Walnut Sphinx Moth, Amorpha juglandis. http://bugguide.net/node/view/4144

I think you may be able to crop these images to each moth can have it's own spotting. :-)
