Hey Hema,
Merritt Island is usually a great place to see birds, but unfortunately this year and last have been less than usual. Although there may not be as many birds as there were you can always find a lot of other cool stuff! I've seen a Bobcat there once, Pygmy Rattle Snakes, Northern Harrier, 1,000s of Tree Swallows, Manatees, and Florida Scrub Jay. There is the Black Point Drive which you literally drive down on and then there are trails were you can hike. Try out the Scrub Trail (for hiking) and Black Point Drive. Best times are mornings or late afternoons if you want to see birds. I have also been to the Vierra Wetlands which were also quite nice. Right now I believe there are Great Blue Herons nesting. It is another good sight to see birds. Two other places I suggest are Springs Hammock and Orlando Wetlands.
Hi rosa, how was your experience with Meritt Island? I am planning to visit in May? I sit safe to hike by foot or is car better? What is the best time of the day to be their? have you been to Vierra Wetlands too?I was told early morning is good for Vierra.
