Cacophis squamulosus
My husband found this tiny baby Golden-crowned Snake, about 12cm long, in our backyard this afternoon. Golden-crowned Snakes are mildly venomous but are reluctant to bite. However, they will rear up in a bluff display of menace (as seen in shots 5 & 6). This one was very cute and I'm afraid we didn't find his threatening display scary at all!

Great series!
Thanks Neil & Leuba - yep, this is the one! : )
That is a fantastic shot - he looks great and deserves to be in a book !
haha Is this the famous little guy? He might ask for book royalties :-/ Awesome series of this beautiful snake.
Great shots. I love finding baby snakes. Although finding a whole nest of several dozen can be a bit disturbing. We have a tiny little species here, called a White-lipped snake. It is similarly cute in it's attempts to look menacing.
Amazingly beautiful!!
What a wonderful creature to have in your garden. That must have been an exciting find.
Thanks Mona and jcdlad (I'm so glad your students enjoyed it)!
Very nice series and very handsome fella..
This is amazing! I am a school teacher and I have shared this with some of my students. They are also very impressed!
Thank you everyone!

Thank you everyone! Joshua, there is certainly a lot of strength in that tiny body!
wow... amazing photos. that's incredible how it appears he can stretch out over half his body length.
nice capture, beautiful snake
Thanks everyone! Anita, the snake was wrapped around my husband's finger so I got down very low and went in close with my camera. I actually took a lot of very awful shots in order to get these few good ones!
