Columba livia

Notes:

An interesting assortment of pigeons dust bathing near Lake Overholser. I was especially intrigued by the fancy brown one with feathered legs! =)

Feral Pigeons are all descended from Rock Pigeons (also known as Rock Doves) which were domesticated thousands of years ago, some being interbred with Stock Doves and perhaps others to produce many colour variations. Many of these were taken to the 4 corners of the earth and have since been released or escaped into the wild where they have formed huge populations. Long ago scientists decided that they should all stay under the Columba livia banner.
