European Roller

Coracias garrulus

Description:

Another stunning migrant passing through Qatar en-route from wintering grounds in Africa to breeding areas in Europe. I was surprised by the size of this bird (29-32 cm in lenght, similar to jackdaws). In the pictures you can see the full plumage of the bird, including the turquoise front, electric blue shoulders and wings and brown back.

Habitat:

Spotted on irrigated farm land. Native to

Notes:

We see migration coming towards an end in Qatar - last species to arrive is the Golden oriole which we spotted (but didn't photograph) on Friday.
