Basket lerp

Cardiaspina sp.

Description:

A colorful psyllid insect nymph living under a sugary protective basket which it weaves for itself. This species always produces a zone of red discoloration surrounding its position and visible from both sides of the leaf.

Notes:

These can become very prolific and cover every leaf of one or two trees. I have seen a very similar one to this species before but I think it is another species. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/909... Cardiaspina textrix?

beautiful shots Martin - both lerp and insect ! The Cardianspina lerps appear to be larger and more colourful. Would love to see one of these one day...

Thanks Argy Bee
Here is a similar one for a possible assist for ID.
NZ seems to have better research on our psyllids than we do.

Great shots martin. That's very gaudy for a psyllid.
