Coast Range Fence Lizard

Sceloporus occidentalis bocourtii

Description:

Subpecies of Western Fence Lizard found in the San Francisco bay area. Color is brown with some black blotches. Light brown markings on the sides of the back make stripes or irregular lines. There is sometimes blue spots along the back. Belly is grey with blue that can be seen from the side on the males and faint on females

Habitat:

This was spotted near a meadow by a creek.

Notes:

It is reported that their is a protein in the blood of the Western Fence Lizard species that kill Deer Ticks when they try to feed off them. They believe that is the reason we have less Lyme Disease then eastern states.
