rusty tree frog

Hypsiboas boans

Description:

Large frog, rusty brown or greenish.

Habitat:

Common in South America, in the jungle near streams.

Notes:

This frog is heard before it is seen; its loud call sounds like a dog barking, hence the name "boans" which means "barking". The males hollow out a small puddle, and wait for females to lay their eggs inside (photo n° 3).
