A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Just moved to a new house, and this lovely tree lives in the front. From a distance, its leaves look wine-red, but as you get closer, you can see that they are greener, with red flowers/pollen/whatever that stuff is (I do aim to learn more about the arboreal world one of these days). Not a very tall tree; trunk is thick and gnarly, and about four feet from the ground it splits off into magnificent, wide branches.
Connecticut, USA.

Japanese maple, said our arborist.
Thanks for the info and leads!
The red winged seeds you are seeing are typical of Maple trees. They are called samaras. They disperse by twirling like a helicopter. The leaf looks palmate which is also consistent with Maple tree. Look up Acer trees in your area and compare the bark and leaf closely. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maple
