Polygonia gracilis

Description:

Butterfly with jagged edged wings. The ventral side is brown with a thick gray band along the outside edge. There is a white comma shaped mark which gives it it's name. The dorsal side is orange with black spots and edging.

Habitat:

Along a river on various plants about 5,000 feet in elevation in Yosemite National Park. This species can be found throughout the western US and Canada.
