Red-shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

Description:

Happy Mother's Day! The mother hawk appears to be reassuring her nestling after jays, crows, and some other small but vociferous birds mobbed the nest. This happens many times a day (it gets really noisy back there!) and is often broken up and quieted down by one or both of the parents making a defensive show around the treetops. I'm amazed at how the parents can maneuver almost silently through dense limbs and disappear completely only to reappear from a completely different direction.

Habitat:

Spotted in a tall pine tree in my backyard.
