Malaysian Moon Moth

Actias maenas

Description:

Saturniidae This is not a MV lamp attractee but a subject I found during the day in the bush. Shame about the missing tail end but a stunning subject. It warmed up with my attention and eventually flew off. I presume observing these large moths in flight is an unusual occurrence because it happens under the cover of darkness but a sight to behold - reminiscent to footage your see of macaw parrots on the wing. This species ranges from Malaysia, to Sumatra, Java, the Philippines, and the surrounding region in Southeast Asia and South Asia.
